Mother Nature's Critters Tour

Stop in at the North Country Chamber of Commerce for a free brochure detailing our 'Tours" highlighting the various points of interest each area has to offer! ~ Complete with traveling instructions, each 'Tour' begins and ends at the rest area on the outskirts of Colebrook, right on Rt. 3 (North) where the North Country Chamber is located. ~ Enjoy!

When you leave this Rest Area, turn right.

Go north on Rt. 3 to West Stewartstown and take a left just after The Spa onto Rt. 114. Just after crossing the bridge into Vermont, take the Power House Road on the right. Explore Beecher Falls and the walking path bridge, Ethan Allen Furniture Co. and the dam on the Connecticut River. The Power House Road loops out to Rt. 102, so take a left onto Rt. 102, back to the junction of Rt. 114.

Now take a right onto Rt. 114 where the Fletcher Memorial Park can be seen on your left and the Canaan Historical Society and the Alice M. Ward Memorial Library are viewed at the junction of 102 and 114.

Continue on Rt. 114 into the Wallace Pond and the Averill Pond area. Watch for moose along this section - numerous sightings in the summer months!

Stay on Rt. 114 From Averill to Norton. Black Turn Brook State Forest is on your right past the U.S./Canadian Customs building. Continue on Rt. 114 to Island Pond where you'll see Island Pond on your right and this is where you want to pick up Rt. 105...

Rt. 105 takes you past Island Pond and Brighton State Park - Nulhegan Pond and down into the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge (Stone Dam Rd. to Molly Beattie Bog Boardwalk) and into Bloomfield where you'll pick up Rt. 102 again. Take a left here and enjoy the beauty of the Connecticut River Valley from the Vermont side. Beautiful farmlands and a glimpse of the few remaining working farms. Pass the Lyman Falls State Park between Bloomfield ,VT/North Stratford, NH and Lemington, VT / Columbia, NH.

Once into Columbia, there's a short section here that crosses the Connecticut River via the Columbia Covered Bridge and takes you out to Rt. 3. Take a drive across the bridge then return to Rt. 102. This will bring you back into Canaan near the Canaan Community Recreational Park and Picnic area . Take a right, cross the bridge back into New Hampshire and Rt. 3. Turn right and end again at the Rest Area on Rt. 3 in Colebrook.
